    This was great, so clear and to the point, the side by side comparison helped so much! Questions; I noticed your PRE STAIN said "oil based" 1) --Is there a "pre stain" that works with the water based stain? 2) here are some steps I want to use-- wiill this work? Step 1- sand,prep and then PRE STAIN with wood conditioner that is WATER based---- this is because I am going to use the water based stain AND I would like to REALLY consider staining with ACRYLIC PAINT( these are water based) 2) wipe off the stain as you said 3)This next part is a big question; I REALLY WANT to use --- LACQUER as a top coat!! Can I use the LACQUER top coat OVER the water based stain AND the WOOD conditioner and NOT get ANY adverse effects???? NOTE: I have USED acrylics and top coated it WITH LACQUER and never had any problem--- I just have no idea what would happen as I would be using the PRE STAIN wood conditioner also, Do you have any idea of effects of USING SPRAY LACQUER, as the pre stain conditioner is already on the piece?? Thanks for this great video!! Any ideas are very much appreciated!

      @biscuittreewoodworks 9 годин тому

      Yes, there are pre stain conditioners for water based stains. You shouldn’t have any issues with using lacquer over the pre stain conditioner and stain. Lacquer is perfectly fine for a top coat after staining. Hope that helps!

    Clear concise instructions with excellent editing. I recently had to relocate and build a shop 1/4 the size of my last one. That meant making a new, smaller sled. I, too, bought T-track for runners. I planned to use them like you did but was going to flip them the other way to eliminate the need for chamfering the screw holes. Is there a reason not to do it this way?

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks 9 годин тому

      Maybe you just used the wrong term, but the runners on the bottom are miter bars, not t-tracks! Don’t mix those up because t-track will not fit inside the miter slots!

    dust is an issue - but can't you just stick some grippy stuff onto the bottom of your home made tracks?

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks 9 годин тому

      If you put anything on the bottom, the track won’t sit perfectly flat on the surface you are cutting. That will reduce accuracy and cause tear out.

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks 3 дні тому

      They are correct in that it’s not necessary, but in my opinion stain looks a lot better if you use a pre stain conditioner first. If you’re not sure, test it out on some scraps first and see which you like better.

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks 4 дні тому

      The big tools help speed things up, but all you really need to build this sled is a table saw and a drill. Instead of the jointer, you can flatten the fences on the table saw. The groove for the track can be routed in with a router and edge guide or dado stack on the table saw or it can be skipped all together. The sanding can be done with a random orbital sander or by hand with a bit of elbow grease. Just because you don't have my specific tools doesn't mean you can't make the same project. And if you don't know how to do something, just reach out and I'm happy to help you find a way to do it with the tools you have available! I have people email and ask me all the time!

    You used an oil base top coat not minwax then used a water based poly. How is this suppose to be effective. Shouldn't oil stick with oil???

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks 4 дні тому

      I get this question a lot! You can absolutely use a water based poly over an oil stain, the key is to ensure the oil stain has completely cured before applying the water based poly. If you love the look of an oil stain, and don't want the amber tent that oil based poly adds, then you can use a water based poly that won't change the color! Also, just to be clear after reading your question a second time. I hope you didn't get confused by me showing different samples and techniques. The oil based poly and the water based poly were applied to different boards to show the differences between the two, not both on the same board.

      I used teak oil in the video. However, if you can find 100% PURE tung oil, that is my preference and what I use now. Anything called "tung oil finish" is not pure tung oil, and is instead a mixture of oils, thinners, and varnish. Here is a link to the tung oil I use now: amzn.to/3RkZCgc

    Great video and question for you... I’m trying to stain some wooden bases/plaques I picked up at a craft store. Only SOME of them are absorbing the stain. They were all sanded and treated with Varastane preconditioner. I waited over night for the conditioner to dry because there is NO mention on the can about needing to apply it right away. It just says wait 30 minutes before staining. Any idea of what’s going on here? 😐

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks 5 днів тому

      So a couple things come to mind that could cause this. First, you said you sanded before applying the pre-stain conditioner. What grits did you use? If you sand with too high of a grit, you will burnish the surface and block the pores from absorbing stain and finish. Second, you could have used too much pre-stain conditioner. It doesn't take much and you should wipe away any excess that doesn't absorb into the wood after a few minutes. Third, you may have waited too long. Typically you apply the pre-stain conditioner and then apply the stain between 30 minutes to 2 hours later. If you are outside of that window, it's recommended to sand the conditioner away and reapply. Final note, you can try to apply a second coat of stain to get more pigments into the wood and darken the stain on the ones that are too light. I hope that helps! Good luck!

    • @Mancer1980
      @Mancer1980 5 днів тому

      Thanks man! It really could have been any of those things. I’ll try some more sanding soon. I read in some forums that it’s totally okay to let Varathane conditioner sit over night so I don’t THINK that’s the issue. One final note - these plaques were purchased at Hobby Lobby and I’m wondering if the wood they use is already treated or sealed in some way. Some of them don’t “feel” like regular wood. 🤔

    I prefer to do that kind of assembly 90 degree on the side if you want. So the side panel is on the bottom and you just set the stuff in and, then, add the other side over it after. Important so put a piece of wood before so you get some clearance to set the clamps... And, for sure watch your square out of the 4 corners (I generally use clamp in diagonal). Less efforts. I got a bad back so...

    A friend sent me a text to check out your channel. Glad he did, you have some good videos. I use a lot of the items you mentioned. 1.I have several 5 gallon buckets and I put them under the out feed table of my table saw, joiner, planner, lathe, chop saw, band saw, they come in handy to throw cut offs and trash in. ( Fast Food restaurants go though a lot of pickles and throw 5 gallon buckets away, you can get them free if you ask.) 2. I buy the large roll of brown paper and use under my glue ups for easy clean ups. 3. I never put water on my Diamond stones, it will cause rust in the lower valleys of the stone, I use automotive glass cleaner, it is ammonia free and a great lubricant. 4. I throw my Desiccant packs in the microwave for a few seconds to renew them and they are good as new. 5. I keep my shop locked and installed a door bell for family and visitors to buzz in while I'm working in the shop. I don't want no any one sneaking up behind me while I'm running the table saw or lathe. ( I try to practice safety in the shop.) 6. My dust collector is 3 HP and 220 volts. I installed a Magnetic Switch by the motor and run door bell wire to 5 switches around my shop and painted the cover RED. It works for me, (My shop is 40' x 60' and I don't have to hunt for a remote control anymore.) 7. I keep a flea/lice comb close to my sander, it works great to clean the sawdust off the sander so the pad stick tight. 8. I use Grease Lighting cleaner for my saw blades, it works better than simple green to clean the pitch off the teeth of the blade. ( I like you bucket lid idea, I will use it next time.) 9. Large power tool has magnetic switches ( I replaced switch if they didn't come with them) in my area we are always getting power bump. I want the machine to stay off until I reset, not come on when the power comes back on. 10. Used the tooth bushes for years, I took my old electric tooth bush (still working) to use in my shop when I got my new one...Its a good way to recycle instead of throwing it away. 11. I have a sink in my shop to wash up, I keep foam hand soap for simple hand washing and Fast Orange hand cleaner for heavy duty hand washing. 12. I have a security camera system in my shop so I can monitor when I'm not around, I installed lights to leave on inside my shop. I purchased Ceramic Candelabra Socket, E12 Bulb Lamp Holder Screw Base and some 7WATT C7 Bulb (Equivalent to E12 Halogen Bulb 60W, Daylight White 6000K) I took some old oil camping lanterns and retro them and hung them around my shop. Only running 7 watt bulbs keeps my electric bill down and that is bright enough to see color images on my cameras. Biscuit tree wood works, looking forward to seeing your next video.........Thanks.
